Will Sillar took this topographically revealing photograph into the sunset from Dun na Cuaiche, the folly above Inveraray Castle, on the 29th December.
It looks down over the Castle, the town, the harbour – with Loch Shira curling in past it off Loch Fyne and washing across the town’s waterfront – and on down Loch Fyne to Dalchenna on the right and Creggans in the left.
The gentle bends in Loch Fyne disguise its length – a total of around 40 miles from its entrance off Kilbrannan Sound to Cairndow at the head of Glen Fyne. It is the longest sea loch in the UK but each of its sections is a world of its own – and this photograph maps one of them almost completely.
Strone Point, at the northern entrance to Loch Shira, which would mark the upper limit of this section, is just out of sight about half way up the left hand side of this photograph.
